Missions

FAITH BEYOND OUR WALLS

The Christian faith has always reached beyond the walls of the local church. From the earliest believers who carried the Gospel throughout the ancient world to missionaries serving across cultures today, Christians have been called to make Christ known through faithful words, compassionate service, and lives shaped by the Gospel.

Missions explores the biblical foundation, history, challenges, and continuing work of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. These reflections consider both global missions and the everyday opportunities believers have to serve and witness within their own communities.

THE GREAT COMMISSION

Before His ascension, Jesus commanded His followers to make disciples of all nations. This calling belongs not only to pastors, missionaries, or specialized organizations, but to the whole church.

The Great Commission includes proclaiming the Gospel, baptizing believers, teaching Scripture, and helping new disciples grow within faithful Christian communities. Mission is not simply about travelling to distant places. It begins wherever God has placed His people.

In this section, we reflect on the biblical foundations of mission and the church’s responsibility to carry the Gospel across generations, communities, and cultures.

LOCAL AND GLOBAL MISSIONS

Mission fields exist both across the world and close to home. Christians may serve in another country, support church planting, care for refugees, help vulnerable families, mentor young people, or share their faith with neighbours and coworkers.

Local and global missions should not compete with one another. Both are expressions of the church’s calling to love people and make Christ known.

Our reflections explore the different ways churches and individuals can participate faithfully, whether through going, sending, giving, serving, teaching, or praying.

EVANGELISM AND EVERYDAY WITNESS

Evangelism is the clear and compassionate communication of the Gospel. It involves explaining who Jesus is, why humanity needs redemption, and how forgiveness and new life are found through faith in Christ.

Christians may sometimes feel nervous or unprepared to speak about their faith. Yet evangelism does not require pressure, manipulation, or having an answer to every question. It calls for honesty, patience, courage, and genuine care for others.

This section offers biblical encouragement for sharing the Gospel naturally and respectfully through conversations, relationships, hospitality, and everyday life.

MISSIONARIES AND CHRISTIAN HISTORY

Throughout Christian history, men and women have crossed geographical, cultural, and linguistic boundaries to share the Gospel. Their stories often include remarkable courage, sacrifice, perseverance, and trust in God.

Mission history also contains failures and serious mistakes. At times, missionary work became entangled with political power, cultural superiority, or harmful practices. Learning this history honestly helps today’s church pursue mission with greater humility, accountability, and wisdom.

Our reflections examine the lives and work of missionaries, churches, translators, teachers, and ordinary believers who helped carry the Christian faith across generations.

SERVING WITH COMPASSION

Jesus cared for people in both spiritual and practical ways. Christian mission therefore includes compassion for those experiencing poverty, illness, displacement, injustice, loneliness, or crisis.

Acts of service should not be used to pressure people into religious decisions. Instead, they should flow from sincere love for one’s neighbour and respect for the dignity of every person.

This section considers how Gospel proclamation and compassionate service can remain connected while preserving integrity, wisdom, and genuine care.

CROSS-CULTURAL MINISTRY

Sharing the Gospel across cultures requires humility and a willingness to listen. Faithful mission distinguishes between biblical truth and cultural preferences.

Missionaries and churches must take time to understand local languages, histories, traditions, and concerns. They should equip local believers, support indigenous leadership, and avoid creating unnecessary dependence.

Our reflections explore cultural understanding, translation, partnership, leadership development, and the importance of approaching cross-cultural ministry as learners as well as teachers.

PRAYING FOR MISSIONS

Prayer is essential to the work of missions. Christians can pray for missionaries, local churches, unreached communities, Bible translation, church planting, relief ministries, and believers experiencing persecution.

Prayer reminds us that spiritual transformation ultimately belongs to God. Human plans and resources have value, but they cannot replace dependence upon the Holy Spirit.

This section encourages informed and faithful prayer for the spread of the Gospel and the strengthening of Christ’s church throughout the world.

SUPPORTING AND SENDING

Not every Christian is called to live in another country, but every believer can participate in the church’s missionary calling.

Churches and individuals can support mission through prayer, financial generosity, hospitality, encouragement, practical assistance, training, and long-term partnership. Faithful sending also includes caring for missionaries before, during, and after their service.

Our reflections consider how Christians can support mission responsibly, evaluate ministry opportunities wisely, and build partnerships based on trust and shared commitment to biblical truth.

OUR APPROACH

Our reflections on missions are guided by several commitments:

Rooted in Scripture

The mission of the church begins with God’s Word and the command of Christ.

Centred on the Gospel

Compassionate service is important, but Christian mission must remain centred on the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Committed to the Local Church

Lasting discipleship requires healthy churches where believers can worship, learn, serve, and grow together.

Marked by Humility

Cross-cultural ministry requires listening, learning, accountability, and respect for the dignity of local communities.

Faithful in Word and Action

Christians are called to communicate the Gospel clearly and demonstrate its transforming power through lives of love, integrity, and service.
